Tram 662 in the centre of Sveged on route 1. The route is normally the preserve of the newer trams rather than this elderly example. This 3 section tram is a contrast to the new single car models. The majority of the fleet is made up of ex Budapest cars, like 662. It is colloquially referred to as a "Bengali", articulated trams that were designed by the Budapest Tram Company (FVV) in 1960-61. They are two 2-axle trams pivoted together and thus weak, noisy and comfortless. Apparently they also cause severe damage to the tracks. The nickname "Bengali" is an unkind reference to the impoverished Bengal area of India. |
Bangali Tram 662 again on the edge of town with one of the new trams departing in the distance. |
Benga Tram 609 is perhaps not the best vehicle to purvey the taste of the modern "Pepsi World" as it rattles through Sveged on route 1. |
On the right, and still operable, is track and overhead maintenance tram (SZ5), another oldtimer from Budapest: its chassis was built originally in 1896, then rebuilt in the first decade of the twentieth century, then the whole car was rebuilt in 1938 to be the prototype of the F1A-series, then rebuilt again in 1972, and once more to its current state in the eighties! That's got to be something of a record. |
