Although MTA was a big fan of Orion buses, taking CNG powered Orion V and VII models between 1994 and 2004, between 2011 and 2013 they took delivery of nearly 500 New Flyer C40LF buses, which have outlived all the Orion CNG fleet. An earlier batch of nearly 200 were delivered between 1998 and 2000 and this is thought to be one of those, 888, photographed in July 2008.

By July 2017 New Flyer had acquired Orion Bus Industries parts aftermarket four years earlier when owners, Daimler, had withdrawn from bus production. New York settled on the Xcelsior range to follow on from Orion VII deliveries, the first batch of nearly 400 even followed on numerically from the last Orion VII. This is XD40 7420 is seen on 7th Avenue in the Garment District.

In 2017 the New Flyers were not regulars in downtown Manhattan, but 7435 put in an appearance on layover one evening.
