Riley Bros Ruggles Syd Wood L32652
The oldest bus in the Museum's collection is this 1924 North American Ruggles. It was bodied in Australia by Syd Wood and entered service with Riley Brothers in 1925 for use on the Central Coast until 1946. It was used as a mobile shop around Newcastle for a while and found in derelict condition before joining the Museum collection. In this view it is under a protective tarpaulin.

The bus is seen, minus tarpaulin, at the new Liechhardt Museum in November 2016. Museum volunteers had worked on the Hercules engine and other parts so that L32.652 was able to make the journey from Tempe to Leichhardt under its own power.

White M3A1 Scout Car trailer bus MO932
These unusual truck and trailer units were a feature of the Australian bus scene for a while, in both bus and coach versions, from 1939 as alternatives to doubledeckers for moving large numbers of passengers. The usual source of doubledeck chassis from the UK not available during the war. Scene in Tempe over Christmas 2003 is this preserved unit. The White Scout car M3AI front originally accommodated four seats, a toilet and a wardrobe area with its trailer - constructed by MBA - a private caravan. When found in 1980 the body was beyond salvation. The trailer, built by the Parramatta Bus Company dates from 1947 and was first behind an AEC Matador unit. After several owners it ended up with Pell's Nambucca Bus Service who owned the unit from 1962 until withdrawing it as the last such bus in NSW in 1977. In 1972 they had subsituted a Leyland Comet prime mover.

On revisiting Tempe in August 2009 the trailer bus had been displayed better. When new the tractor unit had to be converted from left to right hand drive.

The trailer bus also found a good niche in the new Leichhardt Museum as seen in November 2016.
