Red Rover VW LT55 Optare City Pacer B25F D164KDN
A Christmas scene on the 61 Luton - Aylesbury service at Ivinghoe church, Red Rover 164 (D164KDN), was one of the four Optare City Pacers purchased by Red Rover for services acquired at deregulation in October 1986. They were amongstthe first City Pacers in service in teh country and certainly caused heads to turn locally. In fact a red and a blue pair of demonstrators started services, essential for the newly acquired 49 & 94 Tring - Chesham run. Their VW chassis were an obvious choice for the associated Keith Garages VW dealership. They were not without their teeething troubles, particularly with the long linkages to the gearbox from the brought forward driving position. On one occasion the gear lever came off in my hand on the 49! Later Pacer 169 (E169VJO) - Red Rover's last bus - was better than its 3 earlier stablemates. It had 4 rather than 5 forward gears, though at one time that is all it had - no reverse! Passengers were often asked to get out and push it backwards!!
