Trams returned to Sheffield in 1994 with a fleet of 25 Siemens-Duewag units. This is 105 seen in 2002.

The system is owned by South Yorkshire PTE and was operated by them through a separate company which was sold to Stagecoach in 1997. Initial passengers numbers were disappointing mainly because the project was so long in the planning that large housing developments along the line had been demolished before it started. Since the Stagecoach take over and with new construction on the route, passenger numbers improved.

A significant infrastructure was the Park Square Bridge viaduct lifting the tramlines into Park Street and the city centre.
