Week 3 of our North American Enviro500MMC imges. This week we are in the USA at San Francisco where AC Transit has a fleet of fifteen of these top specification doubledeckers deployed on Transbay commuter services across the Bay Bridge from Oakland County and arriving in the recently opened Salesforce Transit Center. The Center boasts 35 bays either side of a long central island on Level 3 of the building. AC Transit is the main user of the facility. MUNI has one service half way across the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island, Greyhound use the terminal and a smaller commuter operation by the Western Contra Costa County Transit Authority trading as Westcat who own three Enviro500MMC buses alongside a number of MCI coaches. The services benefit from a direct link to the Bay Bridge cutting commuter time considerably. At the weekend the facility is almost deserted, but at rush hour it is at full stretch. With one entrance/exit at the south end the Centre presents an amazing spectacle as buses process around the perimeter at a sedate 10mph. Next week's YouTube video on the showbus.com channel will feature a Westcat Enviro500 doing just that. We feature 6203 which has arrived on a morning commuter run, hence its drop off only destination. The San Francisco models are believed to be of the SuperLo variety. The Center also boasts bays at ground level for MUNI bus and trolleybus services though oddly Golden Gate and Samtrans services appear to be using adjacent streets as termini. The long term plan is for Caltrain commuter rail services from the south to link by tunnel under the facility alongwith a projected fast rail service to Los Angeles. Whilst that is what is planned for underneath, atop the Level 3 Bus Deck is public landscaped park facility. Unfortunately the Terminal was not without its problems having to be closed weeks after its opening in August 2018 when cracks were found in the beams supporting the bus deck. A thorough investigation found faulty welding procedures during construction were to blame.
