July 1st is Canada Day, July 1st 2017 was the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada and Ottawa was the centre for celebrations with HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall joining the Candian Prime Minister to launch celebrations in front of the Parliament buildings. It was such a shame that heavy rain spoilt the morning's festivities. OC Transpo joined in the celebrations with a smuttering of buses displaying approriate fleeting destination displays like new Alexnder Dennis Enviro500MMC 8128. No buse appeared to be decked in special liveries or adverts for the occasion. However on the day all buses were free in the city and the queues of buses and public had to be seen to be believed. The doubledeckers - usually confined to peak hour operation - were out in force, with many passengers enjoying their first ride on a doubledecker. With the aide of the fleet of New Flyer bendibuses the two vehicle types continually gobbled up the queues, but the deckers advantage in terms of use of road space was obvious when four or five could sit on major bus stands that could take three bendibuses at most. Congratulations to OC Transpo and its staff for amazingly well with unpredented demand and responding flexibly to some of the inevitable disruptions as Ottawa and 800,000 visitors celebrated in the capital yesterday.
