Yarra Trams Class E2 6091
Sorting through March's photos this stunning golden sunset shot of Yarra Trams Bombardier 6091 on Toorak Road in South Yarra could not be resisted for this week's subject. Melbourne is famous for its golden sunsets and this was one of the best with the setting sun reflecting off the South Yarra tower blocks. The Class E2 tram is on route 58 from Torrak to West Coburg via the city and the Zoo. It was the last route to see a new tram around two years ago. The order was insufficient and the route is shared with Class B trams and the tiny - in comparison - elderly Z3 rigid units, making accessability a Russian roulette affair. No more E class trams are on order and the next new trams are not expected till 2025. Two weeks ago PTV did a much hyped tram timetable update but amazingly routes 3 and 16, plus 5 and 64 have seen no obvious change. Both pairs of routes follow identical paths for large sections of their travel, but are timed within two minutes of each other. Inevitably the tram in front takes the brunt of the loadings and the one behind soon catches up, for passengers there is then a ten minute wait till the next pair turn up! The 5 & 64 is the most wasteful duplication, the 5 start is Malvern and joins the 64 on the edge of the suburb and follows it into the city and out to the University terminus, simiarly it trails it back to Malvern providing Malvern residents with a lightly loaded exclusive service. Sensibly they would be five minutes apart not one or the 5 should transfer its passengers to the 64 at Wattletree Road and shuttle back to Malvern. It would even save a tram to replace a Z3 on the 58. This scheduling anomaly is at least ten years old and probably more than twice that.
