In 1978 the "Transporting Art" saw 36 Class W trams painted and seen across the city until 1993. Twenty years later the concept was revived as "Melbourne Art Trams" by the organisers of the Melbourne Festival. Each year eight trams are launched each October each designed by a separate Victorian state artist, seven professional and one by an emerging artist. The project is funded by the Festival, PTV and Yarra Trams.
