An early morning journey from Bay & Taylor via the Cable Car Depot resulted in an unexpected stop at the depot while the grip was changed. A quick operation as the grip man had already rung ahead and the fitter was there waiting with a new grip on a sack trolley. A door opens in the front of the car to give ready access to the grip arm. The car is parked over a particular part of the track where flaps can be opened to give full access to the cable and give room to lift the grip out. Whilst there is room for the exchange to occur, it is less helpful for local traffic with the cable car parked across a narrow junction and passage further restricted by parked cars - mostly belonging to cable car crews.

A specially made ramp allows the new grip to be lifted into place.

San Francisco cable car 13
Car 13 carries the green livery used by United Railroads between 1907 and 1921. It is seen here, in August 2002, having to wait while the grip in the foreground on the sack trolley is fitted to the disabled car.
