 San Francisco's first successful cable street railway was the Clay Street Rail Road Company. The Clay Street tracks are long gone but Grip Car 8 survives in the Cable Car Museum which is free to visitors.

 The Sutter Street Railway was originally horse drawn but converted to cable in 1877. Car 54 survives in the Museum but the subject of the photo is the free wheeling trailer, 46, which it is towing.
