 MAN bendibuses first put in an appearance in the UK at SHOWBUS in Hillingdon, with one being used on the free bus from Uxbridge Tube Station to the showground. After that the bendibuses entered service with South Yorkshire in Sheffield and subsequently transferred to Midland Red North. This one later ended up in Cairns, working the routes north of the city to the beaches - hence the legend "beach bus". Inside the bus still had its 2000 series UK fleet number. A few years later the Cairns Trans operation was acquired by Thames Transit owner, Harry Blundred, who replaced all the full sized buses - including the MAN artics - with Mercedes minibuses on high frequency services just as Harry had pioneered in Exeter. |

 The MAN bendibuses were joined by Leyland DAB Saurer units made using Leyland National components. After these buses had left the fleet SYPTE ordered more Leylands for Clipper services in the nineties. Several of the earlier Leylands were found in semi-derelict condition at the West of England Transport Collection premises at Winkleigh in August 2013. This one was still identifiable as 2012 (C112HDT) which had seen use with Wirral Metropolitan College. Picture ref A019 |
