Melbourne's new E2 class trams are now on the city stretts and around half of the batch of twenty are now in service. They differ from the previous fifity and the key external difference is evident in this nose to tail shot f the first E2, 6051 with E class 6005 at the Southbank depot this week. One of the refurbished Class W trams has photobombed the shot, used on the remaining Class W City Circle route it has traditional colours rather than the maroon livery. A number of safety related modifications have been built into the E2 design and the slimmed window pillars, improving driver visibility are obvious. Inside extra grab rails counter criticisms of the E class and an increase in passenger injuries. Yarra Trams are retrofitting the E class at least with the interior improvements. Bearing in mind that the Bombardier Flexity Swift has been around a while and is in use in Germany, Croydon (UK), Turkey, USA, Portugal, Holland and Sweden it is strange that the problem was not spotted before buying fifty trams.
