South Yorkshire PTE Dennis Ailsa Metrobus Atlantean Fleetline
South Yorkshire PTE had developed a very mixed fleet of doubledeckers. The line up starts with a recent addition, an Alexander bodied Dennis Dominator 2178 (NKU178X), many such buses entered service with SYPTE leading to a little less fleet diversity. A rarer bus in the fleet, an East Lancs bodied Dominator is alongside, 523 (FHL323V). Next is one of the quirkiest purchases, a Volvo Ailsa bodied by Van Hool McArdle in Ireland: 374 (LWB374P). The line up is completed by several unidentified buses, an MCW Metrobus, an Alexander bodied Leyland Atlantean and a Roe bodied Fleetline.

Van Hool McArdle bodied Ailsa 397 (LWB397P) is seen in Sheffield Bus Station. Over sixty joined the fleet and two others were built for A1 Service of Ardrossan. During the late seventies the Irish builder supplied many bodies to the state operator in Eire and Van Hool badged coaches for the UK and Ireland until Van Hool withdrew from the Irish government agreement and reverted to supplying coaches from the continent.

You definitely need to take a second look at this Van Hool McArdle bodied Ailsa, it is not in Sheffield. If you are not familiar with the geography, the AEC Reliance in Reading Transport coming up behind is a clue. The bus, 405 (LWB405P), was on trial on route 17 to Tilehurst.
