San Francisco Milan Officine Elettroferroviarie Tallero tram 1888
In 1984, one Milan tram (OM 1834) came to San Francisco for the summer Trolley Festivals that resulted in the construction of the F line route from Castro along the waterfront to Fisherman's Wharf. The route became so popular that MUNI's fleet of old PCC cars could not cope with the demand so ten more cars, like this - Officine Elettroferroviarie Tallero 1888, seen at Fishermans Wharf in August 2002 - were obtained. Their American inspired design helped to make them blend in quite well. Peter Witts saw service in fifteen US cities including New York, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Los Angeles. The design was also exported to other cities like Toronto, Mexico City, Madrid, as well as three Italian cities: Naples, Turin, and - of course - Milan.
