City Red Wright Streetdeck 35212
Last weekend saw the end of what was once Southampton City Transport's municipal operation in the city. After an employe buyout in late 1993 the company became part of First Hampshire & Dorset which was built up from Provincial, Portsmouth City Transport and bits of Southern National and Southdown. However from deregulation in 1986 the Southampton fleet suffered strong competition from across the water with Southern Vectis establishing mainland services from the Isle of Wight as Solent Blueline. Both companies are now part of Go South City Coast. Solent Blueline, renamed Bluestar gained a march on First by scooping up lucrative university services available to the public and expanded their operations by acquiring Stagecoach's Hampshire Bus operations into the city which were once pat of Hants & Dorset. Too late First tried to revive its fortunes in the city, adopting the "city red" branding across a fleet of largely Wright Streetlites, trying to evoke the memories of the old Southampton City fleet. Imposing secondhand Wright Streetdecks were added from First West Yorkshire like 35212 (SL16RFX) seen on route 3 in the city in July last year. Operations in Southampton finished on February 19th and Bluestar swept in to gather the spoils.
