Birkenhead
In May 2019 the then oldest established family run bus company in New Zealand, Birkenhead Transport, sold out to giant national compamy, Ritchies.
Birkenhead Transport Bedford VAM75 NZMB Hess 26
Under the Auckland Bay Bridge, across from the Central Quay and to the north is Birkenhead, accessible by none other than the Birkenhead Ferry: a far cry from the 'Ferry Across the Mersey' - and these days more frequent. Birkenhead Transport operate services in that area and services which comes over the Bay Bridge into Downtown Auckland. However, if you cross on the ferry, do not expect to see fleets of Birkenhead Transport buses waiting to whisk you away - prepare for a long walk, and uphill! The fleet used to be Bedford based, and not surprisingly switched to GM's Japanese associate Isuzu. NZMB Hess bodied Bedford VAM75, 26 (JL645), is leaning heavily as it leaves Auckland in 1992 for Bayview and displays the open luggage side paniers which have featured on vehicles in the fleet for many years - and, as the photos below show, have been retained on the latest low-floor models. The bus was sold to Waiheke Bus Co as their 25 in 1996. It worked their until 2003 when it moved to Wellington and converted to a motorhome and was reregistered BEDBUS.

CWI Ranger bodied Isuzu LT1-11P, NK4526 (31?), pulls into the Downtown Auckland loading stop bound for Greenhithe also in '92.

Birkenhead Transport MAN 11.190 Coachwork Auckland 34
German MAN buses followed the Isuzu era and this 1997 Coachwork Auckland bodied MAN 11.190 is numbered 34 (WB9778). As can be deduced, the numbering of the fleet is a little haphazard so that they avoid gaps in the numbering system.

Delivered a year earlier was sister vehicle 17 (UH2295), also seen in downtown Auckland in 1992.
