ECW bodied Bristol VR buses were usually the preserve of the Nationa Bus Company, but Cardiff Bus bought a arge batch of twenty in 1974. Squeezing between their 600 (PKG600M) and a standard National Welsh VRTSL3 in the centre of Cardiff is a Van Hool bodied coach. The other Plaxton bodied coach is believed to be from Crosville.

Former South Wales Bristol VRTSL3 912 (OCY912R) became National Welsh HR825. It is seen in the company's post-NBC livery.

Bristol VRTSL3 BUH238V was new to National Welsh and numbered LR8010, the LR prefix suggesting it was a 13ft 5in build rather than the standard 13ft 8in. It is in theearly post NBC livery used on express services, similar to that on National used on the Cardiff Airport route.

Cardiff had that rare distinction of ECW VR buses in two different liveries from NBC and municipal fleets, more amazingly it had the same scenario with the much rarer Alexander bodied VR.Cardiff Bus bought new Alexander bodied VRTSL3 buses following on from the earlier model with ECW bodies and Willowbrook bodied VRTSL3 models. National Welsh acquired secondhand longer VRTLL3 buses from Tayside where they had been new with dual doors. This example with Wyedean MAP branding is seen in Newport followed Newport Corporation buses, the rear one appears to be a Metro-Scania Metropolitan. These Alexander bodies were even higher than the taller standard ECW body so were coded XR and this is XR1955 (OSR210R), formerly Tayside 210.
|
Here we see two of these Alexander bodied VR buses together. Cardiff 353 (WTG353T) overtakes a National Express Plaxton Elite coach as it heads to Newport on route 30, which was jointly operated with Newport. The ex Tayside VRTLL3 is unidentified, but is also Wyedean branded.
