Southdown Bristol VRTSL3 ECW 623 open top
To replace the iconic PD3 convertible open toppers Southdown had twenty similar Bristol VRTSL3 buses built. Those seen earlier at Epsom Derby were in all over NBC green, but 623 (UWV623S) is in NBC dual purpose livery. It is seen in preservation in 2012 working on the shuttle service between Newbury and the Newbury bus rally staged at the Berkshire showgrounds.

On show at Alton in 2015 was preserved VRTSL3 266 (JWV266W), with its top firmly attached. The bus is in the Southdown livery adopted after privatisation and before the advent of Stagecoach's white, red, blue and orange.

Another view of open top 623, also at the 2015 Alton Rally. From the side adverts it appears to be in the care of Hampshire based Moretons Coaches.

Not alone at Alton, 623 was joined by another convertible open top Southdown VR, sister 617 (UWV617S) preserved in the post privatisation livery and sporting "Southdown West Sussex" fleetnames. Behind is 105 (NUD105L), a preserved dual purpose VRTSL6G of Oxford South Midland.
