Part of the 'Buses of the New Millennium' display at Millennium Showbus was 5443 (W443XKX), one of a batch of fifteen Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Tridents for the town.
|
The Alexander bodied Dennis Tridents were the first new doubledeckers to join the Southend fleet for some time. The buses were in contrast to the low floor deckers in use in London by Arriva. - DAF DB250s. The batch, route branded for Southend services 7 and 8, was shared with The Shires, hence the Luton registration - W434XKX, fleet number 5434. The bus is seen on display at the Alresford Bus Rally earlier in July 2000.
|
Seen at Cobham in 2003 is DD16 (N716TPK), the last Dennis Dominator built and new to Guildford & West Surrey. When photographed it was working for Southend but later served Arriva Merseyside and Arriva Cymru. |
Seen at the 2002 Southend Rally this bus dates back to the Drawlane era, so its East Lancs body sits too on top of a Dennis Dominator chassis. The bus, 5276 (G626EKA), had been transferred south within the Arriva organisation having been new in the red and blue colours of North Western as their 626. |
New to Arriva Kent Thameside for their "fastrack" BRT service to the Bluewater Shopping Centre in a special silver and blue livery, this bus, 3815 (GN07AVB), had been transferred to Southend painted in standard livery, though the bus was used in Colchester at least in "fastrack" livery. It is seen a long way from either home at Heathrow Airport in August 2016 on Green Line service 724 to Harlow, normally the preserve of a dedicated fleet of Mercedes Citaros, though an aquamarine MCW Metrobus was spotted on the route some years ago! Equally it was some thirty years since Southend buses called at Heathrow frequently on the X1 service started at deregulation and using striking yellow and blue coaches, like their Van Hool Astromega doubledeckers.
