Transit Systems Volvo B12BLE Volgren CR228L 110
Just before Melbourne's third lockdown last Friday this picture was taken of Transit Systems Volgren CR228L bodied Volvo B12BLE 110 (7646AO) dating from 2010. It is taken near the alleged home of Australia's international superstar housewife, Dame Edna Everidge, at the Mooney Ponds tiny Bus Station set in the middle of Mount Alexander Road. Back in April 2019 Transit Systems with transport interests in all the major locations across the country acquired the 150 plus SITA Bus Lines fleet at West Footscray to give them their first presence in Melbourne. The Volvo is typical of the fleet, though it also includes ten Optare Solo SR models amongst other non Volvo/Volgren combos. The takeover was timely with the contract for the inner city bus services currently held by Transdev due for renewal soon. Transit Systems is of course the parent company of Tower Transit in London and also has overseas interests in Singapore. At the end of 2020 they had completed the rebranding of the fleet, though whilst the SITA name may have gone, not all buses bear the Transit Systems split circle motif. The bus is presented in the long standing SITA livery, but orange and white PTV state livery is slowly replacing it, but coaches - including the Solos - are in plain white. SITA is not an acronym and is named after George Sita who founded the Sita Group in 1959. The business has had links with other operators in the area and distinctively specified Volgren's CR228L body with flat, rather than the normal curved windscreens which give regular models the look of a Wright Renown or Access style body.
