Ansett Roadways Flxible Clipper ANSET
Thanks to Matthew Buytaert for this week's beautiful picture. Seen in Brooklyn two weeks back, the location could not be more appropriate. Though the Flxible Clipper probably got nowhere near Brooklyn in New York, it was the first Clipper imported into Australia by Pioneer from the Flxible Company in Loudonville, Ohio. After evaluation by the Ansett subsidiary they obtained a licence fro Flxible and built 131 Ansair Flxible Clippers in Melbourne. This one was converted to right hand drive and entered service at the beginning of 1949. This was the coach that opened up the country to many Australians for the first times, making long haul journeys both feasible and affordable. The pioneering first coach now has the appropriate rego "ANSET" and is owned by a preservationist in Katoomba. It is one of several of the 132 Flxibles to survive, many having been converted into sometimes opulent mobile homes.
We have thousands of pictures to choose from for our Picture of the Week but you are welcome to send in your own. If we do not feature it here, it may appear later in our picture gallery.
