McHarrys Scania K320UB Express hybrid 214
Last Sunday the Bus & Coach Society of Victoria were able to hold their first depot visit for over a year, starting with a postponed visit to McHarry's Buslines of Geelong. Around sixty enthusiasts took part, a sign of the accumulated frustration from Victoria's mammoth Covid lockdown for half of 2020. Two coaches were needed to maintain the social distancing required so in addition to a 2019 Coach Concepts Volvo B11RT of Bayline Coaches, 25 (BS05HQ), Gary Driver himself drove Driver Bus Lines Denning Landseer 58 now on historic plates. The group were met by Tom McHarry, toured the offices and workshops and taken on three trips in some special vehicles. Staff also kindly posed vehicles in the yard for photographs. This is a photo of newly delivered 214 (BS06KH) a rare hybrid Scania K320UB with McHarrys ubiquitous Express bodywork, around 60% of the 200 plus fleet have bodies by Express. Sister vehicle 213 (BS06KG) was designated to take the party, along with 116 (1616AO) a 2014 K280IB coach, to the company's Drysale depot, but the bus would not start! The Chief Engineer diagnosed a flat start battery, the bus having arrived from Scanias a few days before and only pottered around the yard and without a decent run the battery had lost its charge. Hybrid 214 provided a smooth and relatively quiet run to Drysdale though its air conditioning was the dominant noise! McHarrys has three Scania hybrids, the first arrived in 2019 and two more, with Volgren bodywork, have been delivered to Ventura but the hybrid is a rare species in Australia, but not as rare as the all electric bus.
